The Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing was founded in 2008 with the mission to unravel fundamental mechanisms of healthy ageing. It is part of a broad network of institutions in the Cologne-Bonn area dedicated to research on ageing and age-related disease, constituting a vibrant and collaborative environment.

The Bioinformatics Core Facility is looking for a new member with a strong background in Bioinformatics / statistics / data analysis. The group supports all institute members with state-of-the-art computational biology tools and analysis. Our range of services includes: Analytics, SaaS (Software as a Service); PaaS (Platform as a Service); IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service). For the analysis of biological data, the core facility maintains itself up-to-date with continuously developing and emerging tools. Most of the work involves the channeling of data between known software or exploring data downstream of well-established pipelines.  We do this with a developer's mind, making sure all our work is readily applied to similar datasets (more information on https://bioinformatics.age.mpg.de). The Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing in Cologne invites applications for a Bioinformatician (m/f/d).

Your tasks

  • Use established methods for the analysis of biological data - NGS (eg. RNAseq, variant calling from exome and full genome sequencing, single cell RNAseq, DNA methylation), proteomics, high-throughput screenings
  • Implement statistical methods in novel workflows
  • Develop Flask and Dash based Apps for internal and external use (eg. https://flaski.age.mpg.de)
  • Work close with wet bench researchers to support exploration of research data
  • Provide 1 to 2 days workshops on a relevant topic once a year

Your skills

  • bioinformatician / data-scientist / statistician with a Ph.D. in related field
  • experience with data analysis and very good level of statistics
  • experienced in bash, R, and Python (Perl and/or C/C++ is a plus)
  • experience with NGS and other Omics technologies while being focused on biological questions
  • experience with Nextflow, SLURM, Docker, Docker Swarm, Kubernetes, and git is a plus
  • willing to reinvent her/him-self in order to solve new challenges
  • very good interpersonal skills, service / customer oriented

The employment contract will be based on contracts for the civil service (TVöD-Bund, Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst, up to TVöD E13 salary group, depending on qualification and experience) and will initially be time limited.
