With around 1100 employees, the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) in Garching and Greifswald is the largest centre for fusion research in Europe. The scientists are studying the physical basis for a fusion power plant that, like the sun, derives energy from the fusion of light atomic nuclei. The research is carried out in seven experimental and theoretical projects aimed at developing nuclear fusion into an inexhaustible and safe source of energy for the future.

The department ITER Technology & Diagnostics (ITED) of the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics is looking for a Postdoc Experimental Physicist (m/f/d) - Plasma laser diagnostics. 

The Plasma for gas conversion (P4G) group is working on topic of plasma CO2 conversion in the field of energy storage, and chemical energy carriers. Currently the group operates in one laboratory with two microwave experiments covering pressure range from 0.3-1000 mbar, focusing on fundamental understanding of the dominant CO2 pathways with aim to optimize efficiency of the plasma CO2 conversion.

Your responsibilities:

  • Continuation of existing TALIF on O and CO in the available pressure range
  • Further identification, planning and definition of possible laser diagnostics experiments (CARS, and Raman scattering envisaged)
  • Execution, evaluation and dissemination of the test results  regarding implications for optimization of efficiency of the plasma CO2 conversion
  • Taking responsibility for laser-safe environment in the laboratory

Our requirement:

  • Completed studies and doctorate preferably in the field of plasma physics
  • Extensive experience with laser diagnostics techniques (e.g. LIF, TALIF)
  • Preferably experience in laser diagnostics of molecular plasmas at low and atmospheric pressure
  • Strong ability to interpret experimental data
  • A strong scientific track record, including publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals

Your abilities:

  • Very good communication skills and ability to present scientific results
  • Ability to work and integrate in an international team
  • Ability to fluently present complex scientific and technical matters in English

The position is limited for 3 years. The salary goes up to pay group 13 according to the collective agreement for the public service (TVöD Bund) and is dependent on the assignment of tasks and qualifications.
