Journalist in Residence Fellowship - for the calendar year 2019 - visiting stays for experienced journalists focusing on social, cultural and political issues.

The Journalist in Residence Fellowship at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity ( offers journalists research stays lasting between six weeks and three months.

With the Fellowship, the Institute aims to strengthen the transfer of knowledge between its work and society, as well as to encourage coverage of related sociopolitical issues in the press.

The Journalist in Residence program is a long-established feature in many Institutes of the Max Planck Society ( Journalists in Residence actively participate in the life of the Institute and gain insights into the academic work of a renowned research institute with researchers and visitors from across the country and around the world.

Who can apply

Applications are welcome from journalists, including freelancers, working in local, national or international media who have many years of work experience and regularly cover topics relevant to the Institute’s research programs. You should have a strong desire to immerse yourself in your chosen project in dialog with the Institute’s researchers.

Program structure

The Institute offers you the opportunity to participate in its daily routines of research and discussion. Our offer includes:

  • Working on your own research project
  • The chance to participate in internal academic events
  • A researcher as a mentor
  • An office at the Institute and full use of the library and its online literature sources
  • Administrative and IT support
  • Rented accommodation in the Institute’s Guesthouse

During their stay, Journalists in Residence should hold an internal colloquium on their project or on the interface between journalism and research and be willing to engage with researchers at the Institute. Following their fellowship, they should write a short report about their experience. Journalists in Residence are explicitly not required or expected to write pieces about the Institute’s research projects, findings and activities.

Length of your stay

Six week to three months. The exact length of your stay will be negotiated on an individual basis.


During your stay, the Max Planck Society will provide you with a stipendium exempt from social security contributions.

  • 15 September – 30 November 2018: Application period for stays during 2019
  • January: Fellowship recipients are announced

Applications should include: a cover letter, recommendation from the editors-in-chief, a CV, up to five relevant samples of your work, a proposed time period and a relevant project proposal for your stay.
