Job Code: DMP_Postdoc2023_fullname

Job Offer from January 17, 2023

The Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems, research group Data-driven Modeling of Complex Physical Systems (DMP), invites applications for a Postdoc position (m/f/d) on the topic of “Efficient data-driven Modeling at the Molecular Scale”.

The DMP group is an interdisciplinary research unit concerned with the development and theoretical analysis of computational methods for the analysis, model reduction, and control of systems at the atomistic and molecular scale. The theoretical centerpiece of our work is the Koopman operator description of dynamical systems. On the practical end, we study both classical and quantum descriptions of molecular systems. We currently have several open projects, for instance, on efficient approximation of Koopman operators for dynamical systems, on application of Koopman methods in the field of molecular dynamics, or on similarities between classical and quantum systems from the perspective of data-driven modeling. The details of the project can be determined according to the candidate’s background and research interests.

We are looking to hire a postdoctoral researcher with a Ph.D. in applied mathematics or physics. The ideal candidate should possess a strong background and research experience in at least one of the following topics: data science for dynamical systems, kernel methods, tensor decompositions, theory and application of molecular dynamics simulations, or electronic structure calculations. Proficiency in a relevant programming language is required, as well as the ability to aid with the supervision of graduate and undergraduate researchers.

We offer

The MPI Magdeburg is a world leading center for the development and analysis of mathematical models describing complex chemical, biotechnological and energy-related processes. Presently, around 230 scientific staff members from different disciplines such as process engineering, chemistry, biology, mathematics and computer science perform research in our institute. Excellent computing facilities are available on-site, including our HPC cluster “Mechthild”. The MPI Magdeburg is a stimulating scientific environment with a broad outlook on computational and experimental research on complex dynamical systems, and offers excellent career opportunities for both its members and alumni.

Salaries are determined in accord with the collective bargaining agreement for the public service (E13 TVöD-Bund) including corresponding social benefits. The position will be for 2 years, with the possibility of extending it for a third year.

The Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are under-represented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply. Furthermore, the Max Planck society is committed to increase the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce.

We will start reviewing applications and interviewing candidates as applications come in, applications are still encouraged as long as this advertisement is open.
