Technology transfer – Innovation by Max Planck
The Max Planck Society stands for excellent basic research, the results of which often lay the foundation for groundbreaking innovations.
Scientific findings are the key to progress – not only in research, but also in society and the economy. With Max Planck Innovation, we build bridges between ideas and applications – for tangible added value from science.
Patrick Cramer, President of the Max Planck Society
Max Planck Innovation (MI) is the central technology transfer organization of the Max Planck Society. It supports scientists in exploiting their research results—from invention disclosure to patent protection and licensing to the spin-off of start-ups.
Secured intellectual property (IP) is in most cases a prerequisite for successful technology transfer.
MI's mission is to translate scientific excellence into social and economic benefits. To this end, it creates the necessary networks and innovation ecosystems that enable successful technology transfer.
Our expertise
Research with impactInnovative technologies are constantly being developed at the Max Planck Institutes. To ensure that these groundbreaking research results find their way into practical applications, they need to be transferred to industry and society in a targeted manner.
Research meets entrepreneurial spiritWe support spin-offs from the initial idea to successful business development – with expertise, a network and structured incubation for research-based start-ups.
Pushing boundaries, shaping the futureDiscover our diverse deep tech portfolio and gain access to cutting-edge research and proprietary technologies to give you a technological edge.
Excellent entrepreneurshipEvery two years,
the Stifterverband and the Max Planck Society recognize special achievements from the Max Planck Society in the field of entrepreneurship with the Max Planck-Startup Award of the Stifterverband. The prize is awarded to successful startups of the Max Planck Society that have a particularly positive impact on society.
How knowledge becomes economyIn addition to concentrated knowledge, the Max Planck Society also produces a wealth of patents and practical inventions from basic research. These are ideas that advance industrial development and lay the foundation for new products—benefiting many people.
From research to industryMax Planck Innovation is responsible for technology transfer at the institutes of the Max Planck Society. Under the motto “Connecting Science and Business,” Max Planck Innovation sees itself as a partner for scientists and companies alike.

The German Spin-off Framework is a voluntary initiative through which research institutions, technology transfer offices, and investors agree on common guidelines and standards for the creation of spin-off companies.
In the top 20 research organisations in Europe for research-driven deep tech and life science spin-offs, the Max Planck Society (MPG) ranks second, just behind France’s CNRS, while Helmholtz follows in fifth and Fraunhofer in tenth. When it comes to the number of so-called “unicorns” – start-ups valued at over $1 billion – and the total capital valuation of spin-offs to date, Max-Planck takes the lead: four unicorns and a combined valuation exceeding $67 billion.
