Curriculum Vitae

Thorsten Holz is a scientific director at the Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy (MPI-SP) and a former faculty member at Ruhr University Bochum, where he worked from 2010 to 2021. He received a diploma in computer science from RWTH Aachen University in 2005 and a Ph.D. from the University of Mannheim in 2009. Following his doctoral studies, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Technical University of Vienna before joining Ruhr University Bochum in 2010. From 2019 to 2021, he also served as co-spokesperson of the Cluster of Excellence CASA - Cyber Security in the Age of Large-Scale Adversaries.

Research Interests

His research covers the full spectrum of systems security, including the analysis, modeling, design, implementation, and validation of complex systems. In recent years, Thorsten Holz and his team have focused on the systematic identification, analysis, and mitigation of security vulnerabilities in modern computing environments.

He has received several awards for his work, including the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize from the German Research Foundation (DFG) in 2011, an ERC Starting Grant in 2014, and an ERC Consolidator Grant in 2022
