German nuclear scientists express doubts about the feasibility of an atomic bomb
1942
Following the invasion of the Soviet Union by German troops in 1941 and the course that the war was taking in the summer of 1942, the war entered a new phase. Armaments Minister Albert Speer was seeking new weapons as a result, and got in touch with the nuclear physicists of the KWI of Physics. However, at the decisive working session in June 1942, Werner Heisenberg, head of the German nuclear project, expressed his scepticism to the military delegation. The idea of a German atomic bomb was therefore abandoned.
