Postdoctoral Research Fellow (m/f/d) | Molecular Genetics of Ageing / Killifish Facility

Scientist Cologne
Developmental and Evolutionary Biology & Genetics Structural and Cell Biology

Job Code: 12-2022

Job Offer from March 17, 2023

The Antebi Department for “Molecular Genetics of Ageing” investigates how regulatory networks govern animal health and life span, primarily using the roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans and the turquoise killifish Nothobranchius furzeri as model organisms. The overarching goals of the department are to reveal conserved, convergent mechanisms of longevity, and to understand how immunity, metabolism, and quality control mechanisms cooperate in ageing. We apply a multidisciplinary and have a long-standing interest in understanding how naturally occurring metabolites can serve as signalling molecules that regulate animal health and life span.

The Fish Facility is a newly founded core facility, making use of almost 10 years of killifish research experience at the Institute. The concept of the facility is to provide scientists with the opportunity to rapidly and efficiently test if genes and treatments linked to lifespan in other systems (long-lived human cohorts, C. elegans or D. melanogaster) have conserved functions in a naturally short-lived vertebrate. To achieve this, the facility offers the full breadth of necessary services, starting from support in planning killifish experiments, to generating transgenic lines and assessing phenotypic outcomes. The Department of Molecular Genetics of Ageing and the Fish Facility are now jointly seeking a highly motivated and talented scientist to join our institute and pursue a scientific research project linked to the biology of ageing. Complementing this, the candidate shall also take a lead role working with other scientists at the institute who are interested in using killifish for their research, thus establishing the scientific services of the facility.

The Department for „Molecular Genetics of Ageing“ headed by director Prof. Dr. Adam Antebi and the Fish Facility of the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing are jointly looking for a full time Postdoctoral Research Fellow (m/f/d) (job code 12-2022).

The successful applicant will hold a Ph.D. in a relevant research area such as molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, or metabolomics and have a strong track record of accomplishment. At least three years of documented experience in fish experimentation is required: research with killifish is preferred, but work with other species will also be considered. The applicant should have a keen interest in the biology of ageing, and excellent written and oral communication skills. Due to the requirements of the local authorities, the position requires fluency in both German and English.

Research Environment

The Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing, Cologne, was founded in 2008 with the aim to understand fundamental mechanisms of healthy ageing in various model systems. The institute is part of a network of research institutions in the Cologne-Bonn area dedicated to research on ageing and age-related disease, constituting a vibrant and collaborative environment. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology and excellent core facilities, the institute provides outstanding research opportunities for its scientists. At the moment, we host employees from more than 30 different nations worldwide. The employment contract will be based on contracts for the civil service (TVöD-Bund, Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst) and will initially be time limited. The Max Planck Society endeavours to achieve gender equality and diversity, and therefore seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and explicitly encourages women to apply. Furthermore, the Max Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of employees with severe disabilities in its workforce. Applications from persons with severe disabilities are expressly desired.
