The Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems and the Cyber Valley initiative invite applications for positions of up to Three Independent Research Group Leaders (m/f/d)

The Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems (MPI-IS) seeks to understand the principles of Perception, Action and Learning in autonomous systems that successfully interact with complex environments and to use this understanding to design future systems. The institute takes a highly interdisciplinary approach that combines mathematics, computation, materials science, and biology.

The institute is part of Cyber Valley, Europe’s largest research consortium in the field of artificial intelligence, with partners from science and industry. The state of Baden-Württemberg, the Max Planck Society, the Universities of Stuttgart and Tübingen, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, as well as Amazon, BMW AG, Daimler AG, IAV GmbH, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Robert Bosch GmbH, and ZF Friedrichshafen AG are partners of this initiative. Cyber Valley is a leading center for AI research, bringing together partners from science and industry to create a world-leading hub for research on intelligent systems and to establish an ecosystem for startups in the field of artificial intelligence.

We are looking for outstanding candidates to establish up to two new independent Max Planck Research Groups at our institute’s Tübingen site and one independent Cyber Valley Research Group located at the Stuttgart site of the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems. Candidates should have an exceptional international track record in research related to all aspects of intelligent systems.

The group leader positions are at W2 level of the Federal Civil Service Remuneration Act (Bundesbesoldungsgesetz – BBesG). The successful applicants are provided considerable funds for personnel, equipment and running costs that enable the group leaders to flexibly engage in their independent research agenda. The Max Planck Research Groups are limited to a term of five years. Depending on the progress of the work and taking into account the financial possibilities and those under labor legislation, the employment can be extended at most twice, by two years in each case, on an individual basis according to scientific criteria and after a positive evaluation.

The Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems is an equal opportunity employer dedicated to excellence through diversity and does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, sex, disability, sexual orientation, national origin, religion, marital status, gender identity, or any other non-job-related criteria. The MPI-IS recognizes the importance of a multicultural community of students, faculty, and staff who seek to advance our commitment to diversity. Committed to attracting and retaining diverse staff, the MPI-IS will honor your experiences, perspectives, and unique identity. Together, our community strives to create and maintain working and learning environments that are inclusive, equitable, and welcoming. The Max Planck Society wishes to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented. Women are therefore explicitly encouraged to apply. The Max Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of employees with severe disabilities in its workforce. Applications from persons with severe disabilities are expressly desired.
