Retirement incentives: The dramatic change in old-age employment from 1980 until today

SummarySince the late 1990s, the formerly dramatic decline in older men’s labor force participation has been replaced by sharply rising participation rates. Older women’s participation has increased dramatically as well. As our research at the Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Social Policy unveils, pension reforms and the increase in the financial incentives to work at older ages can explain this historic reversal.
