Collective Agreement for the Public Service of the Federal Government (TVöD)

The Max Planck Society (MPG) offers its employees attractive contract conditions that closely correspond to the provisions of the Federal Public Service Collective Agreement (TVöD).

As an independent research institution, the Max Planck Society is not part of the public service; however, because it is an organisation financed to approximately 95 per cent by public funds, it applies the TVöD for its employees, with few exceptions – for example, doctoral candidates as well as student and scientific assistants.

The TVöD ensures fair and transparent remuneration structures as well as uniform conditions. Further information regarding the TVöD (in German only)
Furthermore, employees at the Max Planck Institutes and the Administrative Headquarter benefit from numerous additional advantages that characterise a modern and family-friendly working environment.

  • Additional Pension Provision (VBL): In addition to the statutory pension, the Versorgungsanstalt des Bundes und der Länder ensures a reliable occupational pension scheme.
  • Flexible Working Arrangements: Part-time options, teleworking, and flexible working hours facilitate an excellent work-life balance.
  • Secure Prospects: Funding by public resources provides a high degree of stability and resilience in times of crisis.
  • Attractive Fringe Benefits: Employees benefit, among other things, from favourable insurance tariffs.
  • Equality and Diversity: Statutorily enshrined measures for the promotion of women are actively supported by equality officers.

Furthermore, the Max Planck Society is also active on the political stage. It advocates for bolstering academic freedom and enhancing the flexibility of research institutions, thereby ensuring that, in the competitive international arena, the brightest minds continue to be attracted and excellent working conditions are maintained.
