Born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, USA; B.Sc. from the University of British Columbia (1985), M.S. from Stanford (1989), Ph.D. in computer science from Yale University (1992). Post-doctoral research at the University of Toronto; since 1993 at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center. In 2000, Black joined the faculty of Brown University as an Associate Professor and since 2004 has been a Professor of Computer Science. His work has won several awards, the latest in 2010 being the Koenderink Prize for Fundamental Contributions in Computer Vision. Black is a Senior Member of the IEEE and an associate of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research. He serves on the advisory boards of Videosurf and Willow Garage. Since January 2011 he is Director at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems.
