The Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy (MPIfR) is the leading radio astronomical institute in Germany. It operates the APEX submm telescope in Chile, the 100-m radio telescope in Effelsberg, the LOFAR DE1 station, a state-of-the-art VLBI correlator, and radio/submm instrument technology laboratories. MPIfR is also a partner in MeerKAT and leads the German SKA efforts, and the Max Planck Society is a major partner in IRAM. Between MPIfR and the neighbouring universities, the Bonn/Cologne area is a major hub of research activity with a particular focus on (sub)mm/radio astronomy and the study of star formation, from the Milky Way to the distant Universe.

The MPIfR is recruiting postdoctoral researchers to join the new scientific department of Prof. Amélie Saintonge. The scientific focus of the group is the physics of star formation and galaxy evolution, in particular through the use of (sub)mm/radio observations to connect the baryon cycle, the physics and chemistry of the interstellar medium, and the drivers of star formation and feedback across all environments and scales.

Profile:

We are looking for researchers with scientific interests, qualification and skills matching these aims. We particularly invite applications from candidates with experience in the study of the ISM of dwarf/low metallicity galaxies, ISM modeling, the halo/CGM/ISM connection, and the environmental dependence of star formation, but other areas of research falling under the general theme of the department will be considered.

The successful candidates will be expected to conduct a dynamic research programme targeting these core scientific objectives, in collaboration with Prof. Saintonge and other members of the group. The International Max Planck Research School for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IMPRS) also offers the opportunity for joint research with PhD students and their supervision.

In addition to this core research, the selected candidates will be expected to take part in the project-based efforts of the department, with possibilities including:

  • Software development to assist in the science exploitation of the new APEX A-MKID camera, including preparation for polarimetric observations.
  • Building the science case and technical requirements for ALMA focal plane arrays, as part of an ESO-funded development study.
  • Engagement with the AtLAST telescope design study, in particular through prototyping of technologies on APEX (including the development of new observing techniques, atmospheric characterization, and/or green energy systems integration).
  • Development work for future large scale HI surveys with MeerKAT, SKA, and/or DSA-2000.

The balance between the research and project components of the role are to be discussed with the successful applicants on a case-by-case basis.

The initial appointments are for two years with the possibility of extension after review.  The anticipated start date is in the second half of 2024. Candidates are expected to have completed their PhD by the start of the appointment. Remuneration is within the framework of the German wage agreement for the public service (TVöD-Bund) in level 13.
