New calls for young Indian scientists

July 08, 2014
The Max Planck Society and the Indian Department of Science & Technology have published two new calls for the promotion of highly talented, young Indian scientists. Interested parties can have themselves nominated by one of the Max Planck Institutes for heading a Max Planck Partner Group or for a Max Planck-India Mobility Grant until September 15, 2014.

Partner Groups in India

These Partner Groups are aimed at Indian post docs up to 38 years of age who, having spent at least twelve months at a Max Planck institute, are returning or have already returned to an Indian research institute. This is a way for both Indian scientists and the Max Planck institutes to maintain close ties.

Partner Groups are normally sponsored for a maximum of five years with MPS basic financing of € 20,000 a year, which can be used to finance for example travel, workshops, doctoral students and post docs, as well as smaller items of equipment. Partner Groups belonging to the Biology & Medicine Section (BMS) or the Chemistry, Physics & Technology Section (CPTS) also have the option of applying for further co-financing through the Indian Department of Science & Technology.

Max Planck-India Mobility Grant

Qualified and promising Indian post docs up to a maximum of 35 years of age who already have a recognisable scientific profile can apply for Max Planck-India Mobility Grants. Time previously spent at a Max Planck Institute is not a requirement.

Indian scientists receiving this grant must spend at least one month a year at a Max Planck institute. The host Max Planck institute receives a travel allowance of € 3,000 a year for the Indian post docs for a period totalling four years; the grant can be used for flights and travel costs. The subsistence costs incurred are paid for by the host Max Planck Institute. The Indian Department of Science & Technology also provides additional travel funds for the MPIMG from the BMS and CPTS.
