Summary
Squares make their appearances by rejecting the dense structure of buildings in the city. Nevertheless they are not empty surfaces, vacuums or vessels, but spaces that develop in a variety of structural relationships. As a spatial expression of the city, squares reflect their city. In particular in the Western world, the square is perceived as a „public space“ through which political and social happenings are imparted. The consequence for the fine arts is the task of analysing the structure of squares as well as how they impact the city around them.
