On-water surface synthesis unlocking organic 2D crystals for next-generation electronic and membrane technologies

Summary
Organic two-dimensional crystals (O2DCs) are synthetic layered materials with programmable topologies and layer-dependent physical properties, providing a versatile platform to explore electronic and ion transport phenomena. At the MPI of Microstructure Physics, we develop on-water surface synthesis strategies to construct O2DC films, ranging from monolayer to few-layer, with tailored structural architectures. This allows precise tuning of electronic structure and surface charge, facilitating their integration into van der Waals heterostructures, electronics, and membrane technologies.
