Summary
Our work shows that regenerating Hydra tissue spontaneously generates mechanical patterns, with mechanical deformation focusing at topological defects that predict where key structures, such as the head, will form. When the mechanical environment is modified through confinement, regeneration follows a different path, and even multiple heads in a single animal can appear.
