Atlantic Overturning: Details Make the Difference

The Atlantic overturning circulation is important for the global climate and maintains mild winters in Europe. Global warming could weaken this circulation system, with far-reaching consequences. However, current climate models do not provide reliable projections. One reason for this is that they oversimplify processes in the ocean. To obtain a more realistic picture, we are developing models that resolve eddies and boundary currents with a resolution of a few kilometres. And we show which analysis protocols are suitable for deciphering the future of the Atlantic circulation.
