Centromeres unlock the reproductive mystery of dogroses

Dogroses (Rosa canina) reproduce through an unusual form of meiosis that puzzled scientists for more than a century. Our study shows that differences in centromere size and sequence composition determine which chromosomes are transmitted clonally and which recombine sexually. This explains how dogroses maintain fertility despite an odd chromosome number and provides new perspectives for stabilizing reproduction in polyploid species.
