Neural networks for survival instincts

Instinctive behaviours are essential, innate survival strategies that animals can perform with little or no previous experience. In vertebrates, these behaviours are controlled by circuits in the brain that have remained largely unchanged throughout evolution and that date back to the earliest vertebrate ancestors. The aim of our research is to develop a mechanistic understanding of how this behavioural control is implemented by nerve cells.
