Summary
A research team at the Max Planck Institute for Sustainable Materials has developed a new design strategy for metal production that combines extraction, production, mixing and processing in a single step. Since the method uses hydrogen instead of carbon as an energy carrier and reducing agent, no CO2 is produced. At only 700°C, the metal ores are processed into application-ready alloys, without repeated heating and cooling. This saves 40% energy compared to conventional metallurgy.
