The Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI-BGC) in Jena is dedicated to interdisciplinary basic research in the field of earth system sciences with a focus on climate and ecosystems. We are looking for an immediate vacancy for the Department of Biogeochemical Processes for a Technician (m/f/d) in full-time, part-time possible, initially limited for 2 years.

Background and position description

There is a vacancy for a Technician at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena. This is a position in the Molecular Biogeochemistry group in the Biogeochemical Processes (BGP) department. The department is involved in the development of methods and datasets to better understand Earth system dynamics, with a focus on terrestrial ecosystems.

The Molecular Biogeochemistry group is actively researching the use of molecular biomarkers and their isotopic signatures to understand key processes in global matter cycles. The position relates to the group's research needs in the projects. AquaDiva, The Jena Experiment and ATTO.

Your tasks

  • Operation, maintenance, troubleshooting of gas/liquid chromatographs (GC,(U)HPLC) coupled with high-resolution and isotope ratio mass spectrometers (MS, IRMS)
  • Conduct experiments with a focus on non-targeted metabolomics, lipidomics and isotope analysis. , to ensure the reliability of the results
  • Development of new methods and procedures for the analysis and evaluation of MS/IRMS experiments. Focus: untargeted metabolomics and lipidomics with Orbitrap MS as nwell as isotope analyses
  • Carrying out routine analyses and quality controls and organising daily laboratory activities
  • Advice and support for equipment users and participation in sampling over several days

Your profile

  • Successfully completed further education/training to become a certified technician in the fields of chemical engineering, laboratory technology, biochemistry, environmental protection technology or comparable qualifications
  • Independent working method
  • Confident handling of MS Office applications
  • Very good knowledge of German and English, both written and spoken
  • Class B driving licence

If the requirements of the collective agreement are met, the position will be graded according to TVöD Bund up to pay group 9b; in addition, we will grant a pension based on the public service (VBL).
