The Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology (MPIIB) in Berlin-Mitte is an institution of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science and is one of the leading research institutes in the field of immunology and infectious diseases. 

The research unit of Vector Biology is looking for one highly motivated Student Assistant (m/f/d) in Computational Biology.

Field of work:

To understand how different aspects of the mosquito life-cycle shape the parasite’s transmission in a human population, we have developed a bottom-up individual-based model that incorporates detailed information of the physiology and ecology of the vector and assesses how it regulates the development, transmission, and evolution of malaria parasites. This large multi-scale model requires a verification step, and therefore it needs to be re-written in a different language. 

Tasks and responsibilities:

  • Refactor C++ simulation framework into Python3
  • Verify the correct implementation by comparing the original tool output with the output of the Python3 version when presented with the same input
  • Benchmark the speed

Essential requirements

  • Strong programming skills in C++ and Python
  • Strong understanding of object-oriented programming
  • Proficient in version control
  • Effective communication in English in both written and verbal forms
  • Work independently
  • Enrolled at a German university
