Cutting-edge research is rapidly gaining momentum in the Far East

The Max Planck Society has been collaborating with Asian partners for many years, with a primary focus on China (including Taiwan and Hong Kong), India, and Japan. But the scope and quality of collaborations with South Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, and Singapore has also increased in recent years.

The Asian research area is undergoing an extremely dynamic development: ever more investment is being put into research and development and student numbers are growing, as is the number of publications and patent applications. The current and increasing importance of the region is confirmed by numerous indicators, which is also reflected in the increasing number of guest researchers from Asia at the various Max Planck Institutes. Of the more than 8800 foreign researchers at Max Planck Institutes in 2020, over a third were from Asia, and the numbers are increasing. 

China

Science in China has undergone a rapid development and research is the driving force behind China's economic rise.

Japan

With its industry-based economy, Japan has a robust research infrastructure: Nobel Prizes are regularly awarded for basic research carried out there.

India

India’s scientific potential makes it an attractive partner for the Max Planck Society. For their part, early career researchers from India are showing a steadily increasing interest in Germany and the Max Planck Society.
