PhD Student Position (m/f/d) "Computational (Bio)-Catalyst Design"

Young Researchers Magdeburg
Structural and Cell Biology Chemistry Complex Systems

Job Code: MSD_2020/35

Job Offer from July 08, 2020

The Molecular Simulations and Design Group (Hon.-Prof. Dr. Matthias Stein) at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg is inviting applications for a PhD Student Position (m/f/d)  according to public sector TVöD (Salary Class 75% E13) for the topic “Computational (Bio)-Catalyst Design”.

The position is to be filled as soon as possible, limited to 3 years and is expected to lead to a PhD degree at the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg.

The Molecular Simulations and Design Group (MSD) develops and applies methods in computational chemistry and biology which enable the investigation of complex chemical and biological processes at the molecular level.  Multi-scale simulations span orders of magnitude in spatial and time dimensions and give detailed insight into reaction mechanisms and intermolecular interactions.

In this project, inspiration from performing biological enzymatic catalysis will be transformed into chemical bio-inspired catalysts for the synthesis of alternative fuels and specialty chemicals.

We are recruiting a PhD candidate for the development and application of tools for multiscale simulation in homogenous (bio)-catalysis. The candidate should possess a Master degree in

  • Theoretical Chemistry/Computational Chemistry
  • Bioinformatics/Computational Biology
  • Computational Physics

Experience with scientific programming (C, C++, python) and high-performance computing is desirable. For scientific inquiries please contact Dr Stein .

The Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems is a site of top-class research with close scientific exchange with national and international research teams.  It offers payment and benefits in accordance with the wage agreement for the public service (TVöD) with health insurance and social benefits.

The Max Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals. Furthermore, the Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.

Please, send your application documents before 1st September 2020 as a single pdf, including CV and names of three academic references, by e-mail to
