The Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics in Freiburg, Germany, is offering a Technical Assistant position (m/f/d) in the Fly Facility (Head: Dr. Plamen Georgiev).

The Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics (MPI-IE) in Freiburg, Germany is an interdisciplinary research institution that conducts basic research in two key areas of modern biology: Immunobiology and Epigenetics. Central questions address the molecular basis of cell type identities, as they are regulated during immune cell differentiation, metabolic response and epigenetic chromatin adaptation.

Your tasks:

The Technical Assistant will perform a variety of technical duties in support of Drosophila-based research activities at the institute. The successful candidate is expected to be highly motivated, well-organized, detail-oriented and able to work independently as well as in a team environment.  

Specific responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

The Drosophila work involves maintenance of the stock collection and population cages, general fly husbandry, assistance in carrying out large-scale forward and reverse genetic screens, Drosophila embryo transformation (microinjections). Additional duties include inventory control, ordering of supplies and reagents, preparation of solutions and occasionally preparation of fly food.

Basic molecular biology: DNA and RNA isolation, PCR, quantitative RT-PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis, preparation of protein extracts and western blot analysis.

Your qualifications: 

We expect a completed education as technical assistant (BTA, CTA, MTA). This position requires a minimum of 4 years of experience in fly work. Experience in generation of transgenic flies via microinjection is necessary. Experience with CRISPR/Cas9 editing in Drosophila is required. Experience with molecular cloning is a prerequisite. Prior experience in analysing fly material by PCR, qPCR and western blot is also required. Knowledge of the Microsoft Office package and light microscopes is also a must. Working proficiency in English is also a necessary skill.
