The Max Planck Computing and Data Facility (MPCDF) is a competence centre of the Max Planck Society. It is engaged in the development and optimization of algorithms and applications for high performance computing as well as in the design and implementation of solutions for data-intensive projects in close collaboration with scientists of the Max Planck Institutes. The MPCDF operates Max Planck supercomputers, compute systems and data repositories for various Max Planck institutes, and maintains an up-to-date infrastructure for data management including long-term archival as one of the largest such academic site within Europe.

The MPCDF in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute of Biophysics, is looking for a Computational Scientist or HPC Application Expert (m/f/d), Ref. 14/2019.

The successful candidate will be associated with the applications group at the MPCDF (based in Garching near Munich, Germany) and will work on the development and optimization of scientific high-performance computing (HPC) simulation codes, primarily in the field of Biophysics. In addition, there are opportunities for engaging in machine-learning and high-performance data analytics projects.

Your profile

The applicant should hold a PhD in Physics, Computer Science, applied Mathematics, or a similar subject. A strong background in scientific software development (ideally with C++ and Python), together with common parallel programming models (like MPI, OpenMP, CUDA), and some experience with large, distributed software projects and high-performance computing are required. We offer the opportunity to work on state-of-the-art numerical algorithms, leading HPC codes and latest supercomputer technology and to maintain close collaborations with the scientists and method developers from the Max Planck Institute of Biophysics (Dept. of Theoretical Biophysics). Experience with particle-based molecular dynamics simulations and Monte Carlo methods is desirable.

The applicant should have good communication skills in English, be flexible and versatile, and enjoy developing and maintaining projects of varying size and computational requirements.

Our offer

The full-time position starts as soon as possible and is initially limited for a maximum period of three years. Salary will be based on experience according to the German TVöD.
