Job Code: [postdoc molbio]

Job Offer from December 06, 2017

The Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology, a research institute of The Max Planck Society, is situated in Tübingen, a quaint and bustling university town in southwestern Germany. Beginning 1 February 2018, the Swart laboratory will investigate the molecular basis of genome reorganization in ciliates, and is seeking a Postdoctoral researcher.

Job description

During ciliate development a natural, genome-wide editing/reorganization process takes place. How the molecules involved in this process interact, as well as which other molecules may be involved, needs to be determined. A creative scientist is sought to tackle these problems. It will be necessary to adapt and develop new methods to investigate the molecular basis of this process. A combination of functional and comparative genomic approaches will be employed. Proposal of complementary investigative approaches will be welcome. A list of publications representative of the state of the art.

The lab seeks a candidate with a PhD in molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related field, who is keen to investigate the molecules of eukaryotic microbes. You must be considerate and happy to work together with, and supervise, other lab members. Ideally, you should have considerable experience in experimentally investigating proteins and protein-nucleic acid interactions.

You will need to be able to develop sensible and creative methods to study genome reorganization in ciliates. If you have some expertise in bioinformatics, or wish to acquire such skills, you will have a good opportunity to work on interesting problems of this nature. Recent experience employing or developing functional genomic approaches would be a plus. Proficiency in microinjection and micromanipulation, particularly within single cells, will be a big plus. Fluency in English is essential.

We offer

The position is on offer from 19 February 2018. The successful candidate will be offered an initial contract of two years that may then be extended. Your salary and benefits will be based on the German TVöD regulations (TVöD Bund).

The Max Planck Society is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer. Individuals with disabilities will be given priority, assuming equal qualifications, and are thus encouraged to apply. The Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and therefore also explicitly encourages women to apply.

Closing date: 19 January 2018
