Summary
The rise of the atmospheric CO2 concentration – primary cause of global climate change – is not only determined by anthropogenic emissions, but also by a number of natural processes in the oceans and the terrestrial vegetation. Projects at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena aim to quantify the role of these processes on the basis of various data streams, and to understand how they are influenced by climatic factors.
