Doctoral Student or Postdoc - Mathematics, Computational Biology, Computer Science

Job Offer from June 12, 2017

A doctoral or postoc position in mathematics, computational biology and/or computer science and related areas is available in Steffen Klamt’s group at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg (Germany).

Our group on "Analysis and Redesign of Biological Networks" develops and applies methods and algorithms for the mathematical modeling and targeted modification of biological networks. One particular focus is the application of computational and model-driven approaches for the rational metabolic engineering of microorganisms to optimize biotechnological processes. For a larger research project, which is funded by the European Research Council (ERC) and combines innovative computational and experimental techniques to establish a new design principle for engineering microbial cell factories, we are looking for a talented doctoral student or postdoc willing to work in an interdisciplinary team.

Your profile

The candidate should have an excellent degree or/and experience in one or several of the following fields

  • Mathematics, Biomathematics
  • Informatics, Bioinformatics, Computational biology
  • Systems biology, Metabolic engineering
  • Physics

Experiences in the following areas are of particular advantage (but no explicit requirement):

  • theory and algorithms of mathematical optimization; in particular, linear and mixed-integer linear programming (LP/MILP)
  • programming in MATLAB; experience with CPLEX or/and JAVA
  • mathematical modeling of metabolic networks (e.g., kinetic or constraint-based modeling), computational  strain design, model-based metabolic engineering

Some basic biological knowledge or/and experiences in working in interdisciplinary projects would be a plus but are not mandatory.

Our offer

The Max Planck Institute and our group offer excellent research opportunities in a stimulating and friendly environment. Salary and benefits are commensurate with the German public service pay scale (TVöD Bund). The position is immediately available (later starting date would be possible), initially for two years with the possibility of an extension.

The Max Planck Society is committed to increasing the representation of women and persons with physical disabilities. We particularly encourage such individuals to apply.

Your application

There is no strict deadline and the call is open until the position is filled. Applicants should prepare a single PDF file containing an application letter, CV, certificates, a short statement of research interests, a brief description of scientific achievements (if applicable), and, if possible, contact information for two references. This PDF file should be send to as soon as possible.
