The role of the Max Planck Society in the German science system

The Biology and Medicine Section

The Biology and Medicine Section (BMS) comprises a total of 27 Max Planck institutes and 7 research facilities, the work of which reflects the life sciences in their entire breadth and at all levels of complexity.

The Chemistry, Physics and Technology Section

The Chemistry, Physics and Technology Section (CPTS) includes 32 Max Planck institutes in 21 locations. Basic research performed in physics, astronomy, chemistry, materials sciences and mathematics is the classic foundation for technological processes.

The Humanities Section

The Humanities Section (HS) comprises a total of 19 Max Planck institutes. Their research examines such subjects as human language, the institutional foundations of the modern economy, demographic change, and the cognitive foundations of perception and action.
