Since January 1, 2004, the Max Planck Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience and the Max Planck Institute for Psychological Research are merged to form the new Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences.
Until the end of 2006, when the Munich institute will move to Leipzig, the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences will have branches located in both Munich and Leipzig.
