History
The Institute for Astrophysics arose from the same-named department at the Goettinger Max-Planck-Institut fuer Physik. Moving to Munich in 1958 it was expanded to the MPI for Physics and Astrophysics with Heisenberg and Biermann as directors. The work in theoretical astrophysics provided basic insights into solar physics, plasma physics and formation of stars. The Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics was founded as a new partial institute in 1963. In 1991 all institutes were divided into three independent Max-Planck-Institutes, the MPI for Physics, MPI for Astrophysics and MPI for Extraterrestrial Physics.
