The Max Planck Research Award is offered each year on a rotating
basis for work in an area in the natural sciences, the engineering
sciences, the life sciences and the humanities. The specialist
areas are chosen jointly by the Alexander von Humboldt foundation
and the Max Planck Society. The funding for this program is
made available to the Max Planck Society and the Alexander
von Humboldt Foundation by the Federal Ministry for Education
and Research.
The prize winners are chosen by a joint, independent committee
from the Max Planck Society and the Alexander von Humboldt
Foundation.
The Max Planck Research Award was established in 1990 and
restructured in 2004 to take account of international competition,
the range of national sponsorships in Germany and the European
Union’s research framework programs. It is now awarded
to just two, rather than to twelve scientists. The amount awarded
has been increased to 750 000 euros, which considerably enhances
the winners' opportunities for cooperation.
Winners of the Max Planck Research Award 2009 are Aleida Assmann and Karl Galinsky.
In 2009, the Max Planck Research Award will be awarded in
the area of humanities in the field of
History and Memory.
The award ceremony will take place 20th October 2009 at the University of Bonn, Germany.
