Award for MaxPlanckResearch

A total of 194 publications from seven countries participated in the first international corporate media award, a competition reflecting trends in the area of corporate media.  MaxPlanckResearch was presented with an Award of Excellence: "What particularly impressed us was the manner in which the magazine utilise images. Images were optimally used to illustrate abstract contents. In addition, images showing scientists within the context of their research work were intelligently selected and integrated into the page layout. MaxPlanckForschung provides an excellent overview of the broad spectrum of the Max Planck Society's research subjects." (Excerpt from the jury's appraisal).

The Brain – an Orchestra without a Conductor
People cannot really get into their heads just what goes on in
their heads: billions of nerve cells work on their individual tasks
in separate areas of the cerebral cortex with absolutely no coordinating supervision.

Günther Hasinger
There was beer and wine at the party, and pretzels, of course. And, appropriately for the occasion, lots of Leibniz-brand butter cookies – a fitting celebration for Günther Hasinger and the 1.55 million euro Leibniz Prize 2005.

among which are termites. Thanks to a symbiotic community
of microorganisms, their intestines work like a bioreactor.

Catching a Wave with the Research Net
To manage complex simulations, such as merging black holes, physicists require enormous computing capacities. That is why they use grid computing.

Science without Scruples
Under the National Socialist regime, researchers in the Kaiser Wilhelm Society took advantage of the opportunity to get involved in important war-related projects. Far too often, responsibility and morals fell by the wayside.

A One-Third-Child Head Start
"People are always going to have children." Today, however, this famous statement by Konrad Adenauer is no longer accurate. But why is that?
