Images of Science
Science often pushes back the boundaries of the known world to explore new topics and make the invisible visible. In the process of this work, in addition to a purely scientific documentation of research objects, sometimes images are created that feature surprising aesthetic forms and structures: abstract works of art from a world normally hidden to the human eye.
Each year, scientists of the 80 research institutes of the Max Planck Society enter images showcasing their work from the most various research fields in an annual photography competition. The winning pictures form the basis of a travelling exhibit that provides a fascinating glimpse into the world of science.
By now, the Max Planck Society has more than 50 such large-scale images (1.20 m x 1.20 m) at its disposal, which have been successfully shown in a variety of locations, such as the Deutsche Museum in Munich, the House of Science in Bremen, the ars electronica in Linz, the Miami Science Museum in Florida, and the National Library of Russia in St. Petersburg.
