The Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (MPS) in Katlenburg-Lindau, Germany, invites applications for the head of a research group in asteroseismology (tenured or tenure-track).
Scientific excellence in independent research is the main requirement. Extensive experience in asteroseismology is desirable but not required. The successful candidate will carry out a world-class research program within the new department “Physics of the Interior of the Sun and Sun-like Stars” and will be expected to take advantage of the wider research environment in Göttingen and funding opportunities from national and European agencies. Significant startup and computing resources will be available.
The department “Physics of the Interior of the Sun and Sun-like Stars” was created in April 2011 as a joint project of the Max Planck Society, the University of Göttingen, and the State of Lower Saxony. Currently the department activities include helioseismology and stellar modeling. The other two MPS departments on solar and planetary sciences, the IMPRS graduate school, and the Institute for Astrophysics at the University of Göttingen provide a vibrant atmosphere for research and collaboration.
In early 2014,the MPS will move from Katlenburg-Lindau to a new building on the University of Göttingen campus.
Applications should include a short CV, a short statement of research interests, and a preferred start date. If the applicant aspires to immediate tenure, a justification can be included in the application.
Applications should be sent as a single PDF file to Deutsch@mps.mpg.de with “Head of asteroseismology group” in the subject line.
Review of the applications will begin on 2 April 2012 and continue until a suitable candidate is found.
Remuneration is according to the German public salary scale TVöD. Benefits include unemployment, healthcare, and retirement benefits.
Questions should be addressed to Gizon@mps.mpg.de.
