Curriculum Vitae
Born in 1938 in Stuttgart, he studied physics at the Universität Stuttgart and Hamburg. For his doctorate - completed in 1966 - he investigated radiation-induced defects in fcc materials. In 1985, after working at the Max-Planck-Institut für Metallforschung and the Argonne National Laboratory he accepted an offer to join the Materials Department of the University of California Santa Barbara, CA, USA. He has been a scientific member and Director at the Max-Planck-Institut für Metallforschung since 1989.
He received the Masing Award, the Carl Wagner Award and the Acta Metallurgica Outstanding Paper Award. He held the Sosman Memorial Lecture, is a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society and received in 2002 the Distinguished Life Membership of this society. He received a honorary Doctoral Degree of the Hanyang University in Seoul, Korea. He is a distinguished Research Fellow of the Materials Research Laboratory and Visiting Professor at the UCSB.
In 1998 he was elected as a Foreign Associate of the National Academy of Engineering of the USA.
