Born on February 2, 1944 in Rudolstadt. Study of economics at the University of Münster, MA in economics (1970), doctorate (1972) and German Habilitation (1976), Professor for Economic Theory of the University of Cologne (1977-1986), the University of Frankfurt (Main) (1986-1994) and Humboldt University of Berlin (1994-2001), Director and Scientific Member at the Max Planck Institute of Economics (since 2001), Honorary Professor of Economics at Friedrich Schiller University, Jena (since 2002). In 2010, Werner Güth received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Tübingen and Karlsruhe.
